2016 Mule PRO-FT & PRO-FXT Review: Work Hard, Play Hard
Aug 07, 2015 - 3:06 PM - by NickJ

Kawasaki invented a brand new segment of vehicle nearly 30 years ago with the first generation Mule. The Mule has long-been a tool used by many industries to do various jobs and has been one of the most reliable and longest serving machines in the UV market. Many owners will make this purchase and never have to think about it again other than for regular maintenance. This tough and reliable machine works alongside its owner in the heat, snow, rain, and cold, day in, day out, with nary a second thought. With all of its utility, strength, and simplicity, there was a trade-off in comfort and performance. Kawasaki tackled this trade-off head on to develop the all-new PRO series Mule machines.

Up to this point, the Mule has gone through iteration after iteration leading to a machine that has been hewn to the near-perfect benchmark of what a utility oriented vehicle is. After years of iteration in place of revolution, Kawasaki has decided to take that billet piece and refine it even further to create a crossover machine that is as comfortable as it is purposeful.

The Mule PRO lineup takes everything that Kawasaki has learned about the UTV market in the last 28 years and really examined what the core customers liked and where the Mule fell short. Equipped with this knowledge, the engineers crafted what is possibly the best all-around UTV that I have sat in to date.

I realize that is a bold claim, so let me extrapolate. The Mules of the past had a lethargic top speed of 25 mph, as well as a suspension that rode more like a 1981 GMC Sierra on leaf springs than a Jeep equipped with modern suspension. And don't get me wrong, this is not really a bad thing. The Mule is a simple tool and it is very very good at what it does. Now for the resounding BUT... But, your wife and kids did not exactly want to go out with you down to the creek on a Sunday afternoon in the Mule. They want to go in a machine that had a more plush ride as well as one that would make the trek a little faster than jogging pace. This would often lead to the family loading up in the Teryx and not the Mule.

The MULE PRO was developed by men and women that literally grew up working and playing in the fields and pastures of middle-America. The Mule Pro is a flagship machine to bridge the gap between work and play. These folks know how important making implements around the property multi-task. The PRO is just as rugged and strong as the standard Mule, but where the PRO series really shines is in it's multi-tasking abilities.

The 812cc gas-powered motor twists out a respectable 48 foot-pounds and will power the PRO up to a top speed of 45 mph. This may not be the impressive numbers that sport models... [Read More]
