650 Rear Axle Remove/Replace

  • Drain rear gear case oil.
  • Remove rear wheels.
  • Remove rear hubs.
  • Clean all dirt from axle (to prevent contamination of gear case when axles slides out).
  • Remove bottom guard and/or hitch.
  • Remove lear gear case bolts (and the bracket thingy if it is still there).
  • Remove left gear case cover.
  • Tap right end of axle and pull it from left end.
  • The left bearing slides out with axle.

    Reassembly is basically reverse of removal.

  • Lightly grease the left gear case cover o-ring and both axle shaft seals before assembly.
  • Inspect bearing for rough spots or noisy. Replace if necessary.
  • If you replace bearing, use molybdenum disulfide grease on bearing retaining nut threads.
  • Apply mobil 424 inside the bearing.

    Specs:
    Left cover bolt torque 36 ft-lb
    Bearing holder nut (large nut) 188 ft-lb
    Bearing hold nut set screw 14 ft-lb
    Axle runout service limit 2mm or .08"
