650 Performance Module

According to an electrical engineer working for Diamond G on electronic ignitions, the Stock CGI has two timing curves. One is used for reverse and belt failure mode, the other is used for forward driving. The reverse curve maxes out at 10 degrees and has a rev limit of 3600 rpm. The standard curve starts at 5 degrees and has a maximum of 28 degrees advance (and a big timing retard above 6500 rpm to slow us down).

At takeoff from a stop, the 650 CDI actually starts out on the reverse curve and slowly changes to the standard curve above 3mph. That is why we can wheelie easier when rolling at 3mph than from a takeoff. The CDI is retarding our timing. It is possible that the effects of this timing retard can carry all the way to 25 or 30 mph, depending on the amount of time it takes for the CDI to switch to the normal spark curve.

Holeshot modules basically turn off this timing retard. They fool the CDI into thinking the ATV is always moving forward, so the standard timing curve is always used. The result is a stronger takeoff from a stop. Some of those module manufacturers claim that theirs produces more power by switching to different frequencies. The fact is they can't. Basically they keep the 650 on it's standard curve and that is the best any frequncy generating module can do. There is no effect on top speed. Something more drastic would have to be done to remove the high rpm timing retard to let the 650 go faster without changing the gear ratios. Diamond G is working on a module that will actually advance the higher speed timing where we want it. For now, get a holeshot, they really do work. Some people have even claimed that their 650 runs cooler as a result of installing the holeshot module.

Warning: You must use the throttle limiter screw when younger and less experienced riders ride a Prairie with a holeshot. The wheelie tendency is greatly increased. Other people have developed a way of turning the holeshot off for use with less experienced riders.

  • Diamond G has it.
  • Nabor kawasaki has one (Canada).
  • NovaKaw650 said he got it from Freedom Cycle in Halifax, NS. (902)450-0020, ask for Bernie and say Scott Wilson sent you. I suspect they are being built in Quebec somewhere, but I can't track it down, and Freedom won't tell me. They did say they would ship to the US. I paid $180 Can, that should be about $115 US.
  • Red650 said Dale Brooks from Nova Scotia, Canada, sells one that apparently switches off at higher speeds so you don't loose any top speed. It is waterproof The telephone # is 902-435-3425
  • www.kunytec.com is also making a holeshot module. His automatically shuts down when going fast so it doesn't affect the top speed. Kunytek's website has a lot of info about it and what to expect.
