Hmmm..I don't know if I can believe that or not. They snap the throttle pretty quickly on and off during their test start in the pits. I'm sure its not WOT though. But if you're in the stands it will catch you off guard and scare the tar out of you.
It usually happpens when a (sometimes inexperienced) driver has to start pedalling during the pass because it loses traction or gets out-of-shape. It doesn't happen at the pits or at the burnout because the RPM's don't get that high by design and because they only run the engine on one magneto (to pull out HP) until they they are ready to make a pass.

So true!
I've never been trackside at a top fuel race, but I've been trackside at tractor pulls. A tractor running 4 blown big blocks making a pass 40ft away from you just about shuts your brain down!

When I was young I always thought my dream job would be being a top fuel dragster chief mechanic.

a tractor with 4 blown big blocks is NOTHING like a top fuel dragster or funny car.

and a top fuel dragster or funny car at Bristol Tennessee thunder valley is a whole different ball game than any other track. imagine you and the t/f dragster in a dumpster with the doors and lid closed.
