Engine Oil

Hi, I'm new to the forum. Just purchased my first Kawasaki. It's a 2001 400 Prairie 4x4. Just wondering what oil is best to run in the winter. Plan on using it for ice fishing and plowing. Just want a suggestion for something I can pick up at a local parts store. I was thinking 5w-30 but not sure what brand is best.

Just remember to use motorcycle oil, not automotive oil. That will limit your choices.

Royal Purple is the best. They make a atv oil also and it available at most part stores. But you best bet to buy it is at a quad store.

It really doesn't matter what oil you use just maintain it at the proper intervals and you will be fine.

I have been running Rotella 15 40

2004 KFX715
'The Blue Bullet'

2004 KFX700/Stock
2004 KFX700/Bolt Ons

on yours it might not matter at all. If you are using a clutch there is detergents in there especially for a clutch to clean it properly.

The anti-friction modifiers in most car oils plays hell with the clutches in a manual or a wet clutch automatic atv.

Catasaki is exactly correct! My dealer told me that I could use any 10-40 as long as it does not state Environmental Conservation on the label. This means it has additives that will negatively affect the clutch. Engine and especially the front diff.

Going with a atv/motorcycle oil will rule out these issues all together.
