Default 1st oil change

12 hours and 62 miles on my new brute, did my first oil and filter change, not a lot of particles in the oil, but the front diff. was a different story, it looked like a very expensive metal flake paint, there were a lot of particles in it.
I will look at it again at 20 hours and see how it looks.

Oh yeah going Mobil 1 full synthetic 10W40, and installed a wix filter (51358)

First oil change on a diff will have scale from the gears meshing. It peals about 1mil off of the surface. It's cool, diffs do that when set up right.

Same thing with me, but this was my 4th service. (Did engine oil and both diffs each time)
Didn't notice it the other times, but when I emptied the drain bucket, it was loaded with gold flakes. Unfortunately, I didn't take much notice and drained everything into the same bucket so I can't say for sure where it came from....I checked each diff for water (none) as soon as the fluid started coming out and then just let them drain while I did other stuff.

I'm very curious to hear if it's normal also. First service I would expect some particles, but this is the 4th...7 months old, 102 hours, 1950kms. All stock.

4200 miles on my 08 Brute...every front diff oil change (every 400-500 miles/20-25 hrs) would be the silver metallic looking oil. Never had any problems with it so I assumed it's normal...just keep changing since its easy enough and cheap enough. I read here a while back to NOT use synthetic oil but dont' remember the reason why - something with the acuator? I did use Amsoil and then switched to the cheap stuff later on.

I build my rearends for my race cars and it's the same. Light flakes are normal. 4 Wheelers are the same. It's a combination of the chrome bearing surfaces, gear mesh on heat treated gears and basic wear debris. As the gear oil passes through the mesh points, small particles are caught between the gears and "mashed" flat into flakes. Some of it is aluminum specks from the inside of the gear case, a lot is the thin chrome layers on the bearing races pealing. That is where the slack in your bearings comes from. Normal wear.
