Electrical Wont Start....somewhat mechanically enclined

I NEED HELP. My dad just gave me a 1986 Kawasaki Bayou 300 2x4 with differential. It always had a hard time starting in the cold, but never electrical issues. My dad said he bought a new battery and at first it started, then he was having to jiggle the key, and now nothing. No neutral light, headlight, or clicking, nothing. The battery is good.

Here is what I have done so far.

1. Looked at 10 million posts and still cant figure it out. I might not have tried everything properly.

2.Took off all the plastic to have access to everything.

3. Tried to pass the relay on the ignition with a screwdriver, and still did not get any lights.

4. Looked at what i think is the solenoid and noticed the connections were very rusty.

5. Checked the only fuse i could find, looked fine.

6. Checked ground to frame, clean and connected/

Please help. I am hoping to use this ATV to plow some driveways in the neighborhood to earn money for school, put i cant plow if it doesnt start!

Clean all the connections, and pay attention to the jiggly key switch. It may have quit completely.

the key switch does not seem to be loose. i am cleaning the connections to the solenoid as we speak, but it doesnt seem rusty enough to cause a problem with the connection. How exactlly do i "jump ith from the solenoid" as someone told me to do??

Start tracing wires. Or you could go back to the keyswitch that you know was causing problems.

it is turning over by jumping the solenoid, will it start by doing that. if its not starting but turning over by jumping the solenoid, do i have electrical problems, or other problems?

All you've done is proved that the selonoid and starter work. You haven't done anything to correct the lack of fire to the spark plug and lack of power to trigger the selonoid.

ok so i found the electrical problem, it was the key switch. I removed it and bypassed it by connecting the two wires together and now my neutral light lights up!! When i try starting it, it back fires and smells very rich. Could i of flooded it, what else could be wrong! I know its going to be one thing after another. And after i fix this, i hope i can help others as frustrated as me

I NEED HELP TOO. I have a 2007 kawasaki bayou 250 that wont start. I went through a little bit of water and after that it wouldn't start the next day. I replaced the battery with a new one. But when you try to electric start it there is a clicking sound coming from the solenoid and the fuse was bad. so i got a new solenoid and replaced it but the same thing happens. It wont pull start either. i also checked the ground wire and nothing is wrong with it. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS. ANYBODY. I NEED HELP.

Thank you very much for posting that this was your problem!

My 1997 Prairie 400 just recently had a similar issue (no lights on the dash, no solenoid click when turning on the key, no headlights, full battery). Based on your findings I opened up the ignition switch (key switch) and found that it was heavily corroded inside. I took a wire brush to both halves of the ignition switch to clean it all up and now everything is working fine again.

Have a great day everyone!
