Default starter problem

Hello, i have a '08 brute force 750 4wheel drive. it was running good since i bought it second hand and only 28 hours on it. i was starting her up and heard some loud nocking noise then it started but with the idle going up and down, tried giving some throttle to it went decent but once i tried putting on reverse died out. tried starting her up and all of a sudden just spins. pulled starter out to check on shaft everthing looks perfect, tried starting to verify if starter operates correctly, all i get is a click like a dead battery. but i fully charged the battery. so i check the flywheel where the starter shaft turns over....and it spins freely. Is that supposed to be spinning free or has to have some tension? please help me out here. THANKS!

Shouldn't turn free... You probably have a busted starter gear. Pull the stator cover to verify

Not likely but you could have sheared your key way in the flywheel too.

Was the starter earthed when you tested it? If it was off the bike it might only have the positive cable to it. Relay would click but starter wouldn't move. Sorry of its a stupid question.

And my bayou 220 turns freely too when the starter is out. Found that out yesterday.

When the starter is out the bike you do need to put a earth / neutral wire to the body of it to make the electrical circuit.

I'm just a newby to this sport, but i was talking to a friend that does motocross racing and he was telling me i may have a blown motor or busted piston, i figured if low on oil my oil lite will flash but nothing went on and i figured nocking noise from engine will be heard when engine is on but nothing too. KINDA CONFUSED HERE
