With the lack of snow this season I didnt get my full speed fix sledding. The kind of fix an ATV cannot fill.
Anyone ever drive the Yamaha Raptor sport bike? Seems like it could be a fast fun ride. Just curious about them. Range must be horrible with a 3 gallon tank. That and no storage. Just thought it might be fun riding around the cabin between Brute rides?
Yup. Lots of seat time on them. They have a ton of grunt, especially when modded. Lots of fun to ride fast through the woods on, a bit top heavy for a sport quad but a lot of fun.
Since you're familiar with the Brute, why not get a KFX700? I am also in MN, there are currently 2 on CL for less than 3k. I love mine and wouldn't trade it for anything but maybe a Renegade 1k.
the renes are just fenderless outtys, and why bother if you going to wear every puddle better be worth it. the raptor is a rocket, i had a 700 r se, its like the enterprise going to warp 9 every time you touch the throttle. they are super light and powerful. thats why i got rid of it i always felt like i could never use any of it. you can get those for around two for a 660 or 3-4 for a good used 700. the range is fine, the yamahas dont use much gas compared to the kawi twins even in my rhino
personally i like the outtys better, it goes 70s and has probably equal from like 20 up to any of the kawis. ands thats just a 570, the 850 and 1000 shorty must be ridiculous.
the supports do alot of the outty guys take them off and get rene fenders, but really once you are talking what, 80 or 90 hp on the new 1000 i seriously doubt a hundred lbs makes much difference, the suspension and engine are pretty much the same, not exactly a raptor in the woods or anything. just basically lots of power to make it fun. so point is i would rather have the fenders and longer wheelbase, can climb anything very comfortably and even at 700lbs for the long one its still fast
700 raptor is a good choice go 2009 and up... stay away from the 660 few problems with those .. The kfx 700 is nice quad to just not as nimble or good at jumping as a raptor but the fun factor is there still no shifting just pin it and hold on
I have a 2006 Raptor fuel injected , they are so much fun and powerful , if you don't ride it often it can get a little uncomfortable after an hour or so . But they are meant to be fast. I was thinking of selling mine at one time but glad I didn't, sometimes I need a speed fix , and if you like to do wheelies it will no problem:grin2:
Done a ton of research on Raptors. My goal someday after I get my BF750 will be to get a Raptor 700. I have rode several. If you are after just speed and agility, the Yamaha 450R is both lighter and faster than the Raptor 700. The 450R requires more maintenance though, and a lightly modded 700 was the perfect amount of performance for me personally. "The Big 3" as they call it consists of a tuner, an air intake and an exhaust, and that's just the right amount of modded for me. In 2006 came the 700 model which was also FI. After that they were about the same with small variences. 2009 and up they offered a speedometer. Lots of guys swap shocks for the 450R shocks over the stock 700 shocks. As far as speed goes they are for sure fast! Most can be found around $3500 for an older 700. Personally I like them more than most other sport bikes I have rode (and I have rode a bit). They are great if you are looking for something with a bit of speed that you can abuse and not have to worry much about maintenance like some of the others.
Thanks guys. I am considering it. I could buy a new one, drive it for the summer then sell it. Basically rent it for the summer.
That would give me the chance to experience it for a couple grand or less. And I baby equipment so it would be easy to sell.
We'll see.
If you want to go that route find someone who had the same idea and buy theirs cause a new raptor is 9k out the door and i see 2016 seling used on Craigslist with basically no miles for 6500-7k buy that than when you sell it next year you can atleast get 5-6k.. Alot less loss
ingot mine for 35, and sold it for 35, if you buy a few year old one a lot less loss. and ifyou use it they get beat up, just how atvs are especially with no protection like that
the problem with it though is if you are trying to go slow if you are riding with others who arent going to go fast around the trees, it seemed to be tough on it. had to be on the clutch all the time. it was completely stock i think i would look into a lower sprocket if i got one again.
would like to find out if the ds or trx was any better at that, no one around has one that i know. they say they are the better trail bikes for big guys like me. they come up once in a while for the same price.
Exactly right just rode for 4 hours yesterday with a group of people and a guy in his mid 40s had a raptor riding with us utility quads and one hour into it he had to switch and ride his artic cat cause all the clutching and up and down hill trails , sharp turns and rocky spots.. So id get a kfx allday over any raptor if You want comfort ride
The quad has so much torque that you can leave it in one gear quite a bit, at least here we dont have many hills. i just wish first was a bit lower. and it goes way too fast anyway wouldnt mind losing top end i never used anyway. foe me the manual is pretty much the whole point, if i wanted to ride a auto it would just be my outty
True id go with a 400ex than
Its 5speed with reverse you can set up higher suspension and get a extended a arms and make it close to a raptor.. The 440bbk makes good power and is reliable
i am too big for those, a few people have them and they are not much bigger than the quad i had for my daughter. i a 6 ft and 250, alot of people say the ds is a good one for people like me
VTwin is correct, a 400EX is just too short and small for people of that size (i'm the same). I've had all sorts of sport quads from a 400EX, DVX400, DS450, Predator 500, Outlaw 525IRS, Raptor 660, DS650 and finally my current V-force. All 400cc sized quads were just too short for me, even with bar risers. After 50 or so miles, my back is killing me and I can't wait to get back to a utility quad. Ergonomics are much better for bigger folks on the Raptor, DS and V. I've settled on my V-force since parts are the same as my other machine and it's almost just as fun as a DS650 or Raptor. The only smaller framed machine I truly enjoyed riding was the Outlaw 525, but the IRS killed the fun in tight, loose packed corners. Best thing about sport quads has already been mentioned, buy used and your re-sale stays almost exactly the same!
I have both the kfx 700, and a raptor 700. theyre both fast, but both 2 completely different animals. the kfx is a lot heavier as well. but the kfx is nice to pin it and hold on. but the raptor is also nice to bang gears and let her eat. my kfx will get the raptor off the line(kfx is nicely modded, raptor is stock). but the raptor has a lot more top end. for tight trails the kfx handles better. but the raptor gets it done as well. just a light more "choppy". im 6'6 300lbs, and the raptor seating position is comfortable. nice and stretched out, so youre not couped up feeling like youre on a small quad. the kfx is comfortable as well. its built taller seat to foot peg wise.
but honestly the raptor sees more riding time than my kfx does.
the problem with kawi in my area is mostly local issue of limited availability. dealers suck incredibly, why i got the can am when i wanted a brute too. the kawis are few and far between so when you see any of them for sale they want gold for for even old used ones. i can get the 700 rap for like i say 35ish any day, they are on there all the time there is a basically new 2014 for 5 on there now. the 660s are 2, the kfxs i have never seen for less than 35 for an old beat one and 4 to 5 for good ones. but those are not efi and not as good handling. i kind of like efi for my area it sees a host of different temps and i had issues with my prairie if i didnt mess with the carbs spring and fall. i think that efi is better for that. there is ds on craigslist for 1800 now though if i find one super cheap that might sway me. they have efi converions for them, at least use to seems like alot of old info and i hope i would still be able to get parts easy
looks like fun, wanna try dunes someday. the ones with the rail cars looks even more fun, 600 to 1000 hp and go cart frame.
