Default P650 belt shims

Im getting ready to tighten the belt for the first time. Everything seems pretty clear except the shim part. Nyroc says buy several so you will have the right ones, but does not say what sizes to buy.
Somebody give me a clue, please.

Default shims

Sarge,
I recently bought some shims to adjust the belt deflection on my P650 (actually, I'm now running a P700 belt on my P650).

I've read that different people have different stock shims to begin with. Mine came stock with 1 (silver metal) shim at .8 mm and 1 (brass metal) shim at .6 mm for a total of 1.4 mm of width. I've read that some people have only 1 stock shim that is 1.4 mm thick. You can see a pic of these two shims on Nyroc's instructions called "P650 - belt Shim Procedure."

At my first belt adjustment, I only needed to remove the silver .8 mm shim and leave the .6 mm shim on it. That brought my belt within spec. Of course, the exact adjustment you need will depend on how loose the belt is on your particular machine.

I later installed the P700 belt and needed additional shims to adjust it right. I ended up buying 2 shims from my local Kaw. dealer. One was 1.0 mm thick and the other was .6 mm thick and they cost about $5 each. That gave me the most combinations to work with...for example, I could run stock set up (total of 1.4 mm), or two .6 mm shims (total of 1.2mm), or just the one 1.0 mm shim (total of 1.0 mm), or just the one .8 shim (total of 0.8 mm) or just the one .6 mm shim (total of .6 mm). For the P700 belt, I ended up using two .6 mm shims (total of 1.2 mm) to get it within spec.

While I had the CVT cover off, I wiped the sheaves clean using brake fluid. It worked nicely.

Happy trails...

I just adjusted my 03-650 and I had two shims in it. I have 750 mi on it and I took both shims out and put a Black spring in. Now the quad runs well but when I stop and idle in drive the cvt squeals. I think the belt needs a small shim. Or it could wear in over time.

Bandit, mine did this too. It is just a little tight and will be fine.

Actually the squeal is a reminder that if we are idleing for an extended period of time we should put it in neutral. As a rule of thumb, if Im going to be stopped with engine running for more than 15 sec I always put mine in neutral.

Sarge-- Kaw. lists 3 for the P-650. There is a forth shim listed in the P-360 parts fiche. They range from .8 MM to 1.4MM, I believe. You should be able to find the numbers on www.buykawasaki,com

For whatever reason, my P650 doesn't like much shim. With the stock 650 belt I was running no shims & it was perfect. When I installed the 700 belt, I decided to start with the 1mm shim. That has me out of spec loose by about 1 mm so I'm dropping down to the .6mm shim. Hopefully that will put me on the low end of the spec.

obx650,
According to Nyroc's instructions (I kept a hard copy, thank goodness), the P650 belt deflection should be between .87 inches and 1.06 inches (22mm and 27mm). Nyroc also said for each .004 inches (.1mm) of shim thickness that is removed, the belt deflection decreases about .051 inches (1.3mm).

Good luck and happy trails...
