the book says that to check the stator output you unhook the plug and using a voltmeter put the +lead on one black lead and the -lead on another black lead and take the total of three measurements. There are 2 black wires with a yellow stripe and 3 other wires. I took readings moving the Voltmeter leads around i got a reading of 12 twice and a .02 reading once and a 0 reading on 2 different times. THe book says that you should get a total of 39-59. I am also getting a reading of 12.65 volts with the motor running and reved up with the voltmeter on the battery. Does anyone have any experience with checking the charging system out to see if it is bad. It costs about 600 bucks to do a new rotor and stator and i really dont want to buy a new one if i dont need it. Any help will be greatfully appreciated.

rotor really dont go bad unless you drop it.

the test your doing is checking the stator, there should be three black out of the stator cover, then go into three yellow leads, going into the reg/rec, your problem could be one or the other or both.
also to check the rotor just put a bolt near it and feel for a magnet pull on it.

A fully charged 12v battery should be about 13.2 volts. On my P700 I get about 14v-14.5v when it's running and reved up with the volt meter accross the battery. Put the volt meter accross the battery with the bike off, and then take your reading with it running and reved up, there should be a noticable difference. If not, you're not charging. With your reading at 12.65 volts reved up something is wrong.

SOunds good, I will get back to you, I have to run a few more test that the book explains to figure out which part is bad and then i will let you know. I think its probably the stator but i am not positive. Its so hot here in Mississippi that i am not in a huge rush to get it going. Its been about 100 degrees the past few days and no rain so its dusty and that makes for bad conditions to ride in.

I been running dual batteries for two years now, some say it will kill your charging, but i say diffrent. you would kill the charging system if the battery was bad and the charging system was over working.

since both of my battery were prepped and setup up at the same time and the same way by me. both are charged the same way, my voltage when not running is 12.8 volts. when running at idle is 13 volts just off idle 14 volts. i run dual batteries becasue i have more lights, two winches, and just in case my stator or reg/rec does go bad when out riding i will not kill my batteries that fast as if i was running one battery.

I have a voltage guage on my machine along with oil pressure, water temp, and amps.

what kind of voltmeter did you use, and where did you tie it in. I was left way out in the woods when my stator went out and i would love to add a gauge to see what is going on. I think you can never have too muuch info like that. Luckly 450 hondas will run without a battery and i stole my friends and made it home that time. On your dual battery setup are you running an isolator or how did you set that up and where did you mount the 2nd battery. Thanks for the info.

the second battery is in the little trunk under the seat. Im no isolator, thats why i said some say it will kill me charging system, yeah if one battery was weak it would draw twice the amps of one battery as it would feed off the good battery and the chagring system.
I tied my voltage gauge off the reg/rec, my amps guage is hooked off the batteries,

since both batteries are the same i ran my pos lead to the pos of the other battery. if i went to the neg it would double the out put to 24 volts. not good. lol. I then hooked the neg lead to neg lead. i also ran a wire off the second battery to ground.

IM thinking of adding another voltage gauge so i can get battery reading also. IM also planing of going to a an dual battery isolator so i can also run three volt gauges to read battery one and battery two, and charge out put. this will take me some planing to get it all wired up and looking like its oem. as i intergrade everything into the oem wire harness and rewarp it to hide my work.

I USED a my gauge from the auto parts store. made by sunpro.
