i bought an '02 650 prairie last fall. it has 2000 miles on it. i went to adjust the rear brakes and they're all ready turned in all the way i've heard of people getting 6000 miles out of them with some abuse. i just dont understand how they only lasted this long... this thing must have been beat to s#%t! is there anything else i should check when i have it apart? any other reasons on why they would have worn out this fast? how many miles have you guys been able to get out of your brakes? thanks!

Check and make sure that all the rubber plugs are in the swing arm. Look for any way that water or mud may have gotten in the swing arm. If it was run for a long time with contaminated fluid it would cause excessive wear.

I have over 4000 RACE miles on mine with original rear brakes.

Good luck

- Ryan

Yes, i have gone through several brake cables for the rear hand brake. The only Solution i have found is to keep that cable well lubed and never leave the parking brake on unless absolutely necessary.

What do the rubber plugs have to do with it? There is a seal on the pinion.

I have worked on a twinpeaks with over 10k on it

His brakes still worked Amazingly well.

the brakes are like a clutch on a shifter bike.

How you treat them is how long they will last

well my seal on the pinion must be shot cause i was missing a rubber plug and ended up with water in my rear end fluid. I dont ever ride in deep mud or anything like that and i couldnt see any other way that the water could have gotten in there. Replaced that rubber plug and have not gotten any water in there since.

I suppose if the water did lay in there long enough it might work its way by the pinion seal.

I do believe that is what may have happened. I honestly cant say how long the rubber plug was missing. I was going over my prairie one day and came across it, immediately checked my fluid and sure enough it was Very contaminated.
