fuel switch

hi, i have a 2003 kawasaki kfx 400 and on the side where the fuel shutoff switch is there r three words, on, reserve, and primary, does anyone know what primary means?????

2003 kawasaki kfx 400 with pro armor skid plates, nerf bars and kill switch, itp gncc holeshot tires, renthal sprokets and chain, ac raceing front bumper, tusk d-flex handguards, and alot of room to build it up

Prime is just constant fuel flow.

You carberator pulls fuel by vacuum through the motor. The prime index on the petcock is to prime the carb if the bowl is dry form draining it to clean the carb or what not. The on index is for normal running conditions.

99 Lakota, DG excellerator,400ex carb,CWR 335 kit,CWR .390 cam,JB custom intake,Crasko P&P head,400ex rear hubs, Modified KFX400 front suspension.

88 Tecate 4 mostly stock Bills pipe and works shocks.

so you use prime when the carb is dry, but for how long untill you seitch it over to on???

How long to prime

I've never used prime.....well not until I changed to an FCR carb.
You don't need it. The 'choke' will also get gas into your carb quicker, not worth reaching down to switch the petcock.
You can use it just as described though......as well as if you run out of gas you could switch it to prime and then to reserve.

Thanks man, the quad just runs out of fuel and I've cleaned carb every jet and hole I could find, rebuild carb kit, checked for clogged lines, checked for vacuum leak, its all stock, everything is real clean petcock etc. I think I'm ready to take it in for service.

Are you sure the diaphragm doesn't have a tear in it?....although I would think on prime it should be flowing fuel. How about the needle valve is the float working right and letting the valve open and close.
I would switch to a Raptor 660 petcock for 20 bucks or so and try that before taking it to the shop.

Sorry i took so long gettin back thanks for the info. I left the prime switch on for 5min then turned it to on and it seems to be working! I have started it and riden it just using the switch in the on position and its workin I don't get it but I just saved an a$$ load of money thanks for the replies.
