Unhappy 2006 KFX 400 problem. overheating?

I just bought a KFX 400 a few weeks ago. i took it out once before today. after riding for a few hours it would do some wierd things. the engine would run fine, idled fine, everything was good. as soon as i hit the throttle it would bog out. it would go a few feet, slow, but as soon as i gave it full throttle it would stall. also it back fired a few times. it did this a few times, i believe because of overheating. as soon as i washed it, cooled it down, it ran fine. anyone else with these problems? what did you do?

also i just flushed out the radiator and engine and changed the oil.

It sounds like its not getting enough fuel , try turning the the petcock to PRI or RES and see if it improves. If so you've got a clogged filter, or bad petcock.

What makes you think its overheating? Is the fan running a lot? Is the temp light on? (If you turn the key on the temp light will light for a second or 2 then go out, that way you know its working)

the red light never came on, though the fan was running a lot. it could be the carb & tank issue..the only reason why i say that is because the engine ran fine..it was only when i gave it gas it would bog out. its only happening when i rip hard on it. im having the recall fixed on it now hopfully that will fix it.

What was the recall for? I'm betting the problem you have is related to lack of fuel, which would make it run lean/hot and bog/backfire. I'd check the petcock and clean the carb and air filter just to be sure. Running lean can do sizeable damage to the motor.

The recall was for the clutch cover. they made it our of magnesium which corrodes due to the anti freeze. the will put an alluminum one on for free.

im new to quads and dont know a whole lot about them. what is the petcock? what do you mean by running lean?

when i turn the petcock to RES or PRI it makes no difference. still does the same thing. it only does this for 5 min or less than it will run fine. maybe something getting clogged up?

Yeah that's the same recall that the 05's had, it won't make any difference in the bog though, but it's definitely an important fix.

Oh - it only does it when the motor's cold - that's pretty normal. It should sit and idle or ride easy 5 or 6 minutes for warm up, ripping on a cold motor is bad idea, it's a good way to blow a head gasket among other things.
