Default Stalls when throttle pushed, too much air?

Just picked up a '88 Mohave at an auction. The guy said it ran great but of course when I get it home it starts easy and idles great. Push the throttle about 1/4 the way in it will stall out. Tried to take the carb off clean it put fresh gas in and it seems just a little better. Had the front cover off where the air intake is and see that the previous owner had some electrical tape over the air intake. Low and behold I put a little more tape over the intake and it runs about 80% better. So I am guessing that we are taking in too much air due to the leaky airbox or am I net getting enough fuel any clues?

ha, home made choke. check for air leaks. check your idle air/fuel mixture screw. assuming you cleaned the jets good too.

yeah, you're drawing too much air. Most likely you have a leak somewhere.
