kx500 vin question

Where is the vin or serial number normally located on these? I'm assuming either the lower portion of the frame or near the forks? Also I read the 10th digit denotes the year - anyone know truth or bunk on that? I do know if the seller I'm working with could find the vin - you can punch it up on kawi's website for further details, product manuals, etc.

the frame vin is on the steering neck of the frame.

google how to read vin #'s and you can find the charts that tell you what each # of the vin means. before 2001 they used letters. all vins should be 17 #'s long.
