1985 185 bayou shift lever

hi the 1985 185 Bayou I have has a "5 down, 1 up for reverse" shift pattern. the sticker on the tool box cover is no longer there. Is this correct? everything I've been able to google so far refers to the opposite shift pattern which is common on motorcycles as well. to shift up into a higher seems to require an excessive amount of downward foot travel to complete the shift. If my toe is level facing forward (9 o'clock if facing the side of the machine) before the shift, it needs to go down to almost the 7 o'clock position for the shift. I changed the angle of the lever by moving it up which is better for the upshifts, but did not take into account the change in up lift required when downshifting or going into reverse. is there an internal adjustment than can/should be to close gap/range required to shift?
