KISS.
1. Have you checked the adjustment on the 4WD in/out cable to make sure that 4WD is fully engaging?

It will make the exact noise that you are describing if the 4WD is only partially engaged as a result of the cable loosing tension. It is easily adjusted. The noise is from the dog type clutch in the bevel gear-case - but we will get to that later.

Same with this transmission issue:- check the cable adjustments on the engaging lever and the movement as they might require adjusting.

I currently operate both 4010 and 3010 Trans Diesel Mules. A few pointers:-
1. Both have bearings mid-way on the driveshaft which are located under the seat. The 4010 is a little more difficult than the 3010 - but grease these bearings. There is a "zerk" (as you call them) located basically under the fuel tank of the 4010 out of sight. Grease that bearing but do not over do it.
2. The front diffs on them are limited slip - so ensure you have the appropriate oil in the front diff, or will have all kinds of issues if the plates in the diff cannot slip.
3. All mules make a thump or clang when you disengage 4WD. This is the basic dog clutch releasing when the preload comes off the spring. My operation with the Mules is repetitive in that I always have them in 4WD in the same places. Consequently I stop when I disengage 4WD and release the preload steadily to eliminate the thump. You can safely engage the 4WD though when driving. I always stop though when I disengage it.

The only other issues I have seen is with incorrect tyre pressures and also coolant issues when owners do not burp the cooling system properly and an air lock causes overheating. I know 9 other people that own Mules and none have had major issues. They are extremely reliable. I did replace the glow plugs on one for a neighbour a few months ago as it was hard starting, and that fixed it. I tested all three glow plugs and they had failed.

If the transmission lever adjustment involves anything under the dash - the hood is relatively easy to remove. The cargo bed then only takes another two minutes, but there are a few plastic clips as well as screws. With both removed you have unlimited access.

If you do not own one the Factory Workshop Manuals are available free online.

I have a hard copy FWM for the 4010 Trans Diesel Mule. For the 3010 Trans Diesel, I use the manualslib.com version free online.
