I have never tried it on a Comet clutch but if what you are saying is that it threads-in and you run out of threads on the clutch hub before the noise hits the bottom of the crankshaft, as indicated in the pic, then yes, the puller is useless. Normally you should grease both the threads and the tip of the puller, then it should thread in to the clutches hub about 3/4-1" before bottoming out in the crank. Some might tell you to put some kind of spacer in there but I advise against it. Being off-center when applying those kind of forces is what gets people into trouble. Have you tried the regular puller? I think it's noise is much longer.
