Installing Dual Batteries

9738 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  coolintheice
I am running into issue with battery die quickly. I have a 8 amp draw radiator fan which is mounted on front rack and large winch. So I was thinking of mounting another battery in stock rad location, besides wiring batteries parallel what else should I do? Isolator? Switch?

Thanks

Magnet, not quite following you. Is the battery discharging to 0 with the key in the off position or is the battery rendered useless (won't hold a charge and fails a stress test)?

Sorry, battery just won't keep up, I can only winch once or twice depending how much time in between, before battery is out of juice. just need more capacity for winching.

Thanks for the responce. :)
do you keep the machine running when winching
A beefier stator would probably be a better option, i mean seriously how often are you winching? And +1 on leaving the quad on winching.
I definately have quad running when winching.
I could winch half a dozen times on the rally's I attend.
Tough stuff you can fall into some big holes (GREAT FUN!!)
The problem is the second battery idea will only work for a short time until that one is drained also .The charging system will not be able to keep up with two rapidly discharging batteries. The only other alternative would be to make room for a small automotive battery that would have alot more storage and then charge it up at the end of day because once again the stock system won't keep up.

The automotive battery sounds good. I should maybe have a switch to disconnect that battery from the system then and like you say charge it at end of day.
Thanks for you input!!
I'd check into a higher output stator first. This would also help with the dual batteries idea. Also might check to see if any battery cables (or power cables to the winch) are corroded. Could you go with a slightly smaller winch (less amp draw).
Check out Warn. They offer a duel Battery control kit. The part number is 77977. I think its a good idea.
There is a dual battery kit out there for the brute. I wanna say I seen it over at kawiecentral and maybe on ebay?
After I posted, I thought I would some more looking around. On Ebay look up dual battery kit for atv and a couple pop up. They want around 200 dollars. Looks like you get a set of power leads, a harness to plug in for charging the second battery, a solenoid, and some kind of power distribution block, and a case to hold the battery. But you still have to buy a new Battery. You can look at one on Warn Industries - Winches, Mounting Systems, Accessories, Hubs, Air Compressors, Flares, Lights, Body Amor or on ebay at dual battery kit, buy and sell Parts Accessories on eBay Motors
