I have a Mojave, according to the Clymers manual it's an 87 because the rear shock has collar adjustments and a air nozzle. Either way the rear shock is "springy", I realize it needs to be replaced but before I do so can the rear shock be recharged or rebuilt, or is it cheaper to find a used one that is in good shape? Any help would be great!

If it has the Air Fitting , it can be serviced, call around your local ATV / Cycle Shops and see if they can service (replace seals and r/r the oil) your shock, or you can send it to a shock company to re valeved.
That Collar is for adjustment on the spring, tighten more bounce, (more spring compression) loosen less bounce (less spring compression) yo need it set up for your weight.
