Recently I bought a cheap Prairie as it had a title & I was bored. However I bought it non-running & its still that way.

Confirmed I have spark (used-plug), & filled with fresh fuel in tank & carb bowl. I believe I have issues with my timing/valves.

I've never dug this much into engine work before so I'm not sure, but from my research & hands on this is where im at & want second opinions. Important to mention previous owner said he rebuilt top end, said valves seemed fine but it kept jumping time when he put it all together so he gave up.

Current symptons. Turns over fine, has compression, but biggest issue is its currently back-firing out of the intake
(still Non-running just quick fireballs)
I don't have it hooked up to the air box as I'm missing the tube so its just the aftermarket carb & a short coupling, I believe this means timing is off though I believe I got it lined up properly. With that info, should I check for something in the timing system? Check valves or something else? (also from a old thread someone said something about issues with the flywheel).

Any advice is appreciated, if you need any other info I will share but I think I covered everything that's relevant.

I would check valve clearance and do an actual compression test to eliminate those things.

You said new carb. Like cheap one from ebay or amazon? They will most likely have the wrong jets in them as well as needing some other tuning.

Took valve cover's off today, when it reads T on crank, the intake has lots of play and can move quite a bit, so I am unsure if timing is off, valve is off clearance by a lot, or if its just faulty.. but I will be checking clearance tomorrow. Other than that by just hand cranking the valves do seem to move up & down without issue. As for the Carb. I'm unsure, I would assume an amazon carb, I will have to ask last owner if he has the Original which he did offer me but I forgot to grab. But I would assume even with wrong jets I would get some sort of running. even if it is very rough.

So I did a compression test, no compression, while theres still pressure build up, its all going out backwards out of the carb. gonna pull the cam and check lobes, if cam looks good im digging into the entire engine.

you're right, last night I decided to just get it over with, & pull the head. Intake valve was bent out quite a bit. Now I'm just trying to get this rocker shaft out, so I can pull the valve. keep updated when valve is replaced if its problem solved or more issues.
