So I just purchased a 2005 kfx700 and when you start it up it sounds fine but when I start to rev it up and and idle rev it you hear a ticking/spitting noise coming from the engine. Also hear it when you are cruising down the street but when u get on it, it sounds fine no problems. Also back fires a little when u first start it up. Can anyone help me with them plug. Have no idea what it could be. He told me it may need the carbs cleaned but not sure if that would be the reason.

I'd start with a valve clearance check. When I rebuilt the top end on mine, I forgot to readjust the valve clearances. It was ticking like crazy when I first cranked it over.

Section 2-22 of the repair manual:

It's not too difficult to do. You'll need a set of feeler gauges and some patience as it's a bit of a tight fit to get the gauge down under the cams. It's easier of you have a set like this with the angled ends:
68050 Valve Tappet Feeler Gauge
