Advtages or removing shims under primary spring?

My question what are the advantages of taking out thes shims that are under the front primary sping. I have heard people doing this when installing new primaries. I hve just installted the EPI Maroon spring and it seems a little snapier. Downshifing and EBC seem the same but not real sure. But I was wondering if taking these out would help or what do they do. How many are there in there. I have a 05 P700. Any info on this would truely appreriate it.

I think most have 1 shim under the primary spring. Removing it you would have slightly less stall and a little less shiftout pressure. So you would see a little decrease in engine RPM at any given speed. Each shim is worth approx 100 rpm of stall. It is a small but noticable difference. Try it and see what you like, everone is different. There is no "perfect" combo. Its all a trade off somewhere. Go with whatever works for you.

From what I understand, the 02 and early 03 P650's came stock with no shims under the primary spring (at normal altitude) and the late 03 P650s and all P700s came stock with 1 shim (at normal altitude). I think you can add 1 shim to all of the above for the high altitude kit.

Like you, I too just installed an EPI maroon spring and I like it so far. I put no shims on this spring.

In a nutshell, each shim adds about 100 rpm before initial engagment and you can generally add as many as 3 shims if you want a slightly higher engagement. Personally, I like a no stall spring and don't have any plans to add any shims to the EPI Maroon spring. Before this spring, I had the stock P700 spring with 2 shims and before that I had the stock P650 spring with only 1 shim. I could tell the difference in engagement with 2 shims vs. 1 shim, but it was very slight and not really noticeable unless you own and ride the quad often.

Happy trails...:)

Mike and speed thanks for the very quick response. I cant really tell a difference with then just the one shim. I might right it some more and see if I like it even more but if not I will take the shim out and try again. I like the very little stall of the spring to help get out of the hole quicker. but once again thank you all for the very quick and informative feedback.

Thanks
