ok first of all i dont know what year it is. is there anyway to find out for sure? the sticker on the frame says kef300a. but it doesnt say a1 a3 or anything like that so i dont know exactly how to figure it out. can anyone help?

Next im missing a bunch of nuts and bolts that hold everything together. i have all the engine mounting bolts but am missing the nuts. and all the bolts that hold on the air cleaner system. also the bolts that hold on all the plastics. so does anyone know the size of the bolts width and length and thread pattern so i can get some from lowes? help would be greatly appritiated here. i have all the torque specs and everything so any help on the bolt sizes would help greatly. i really want to get this thing put back together.

and since it did not come with a battery i could just use the pull starter right? until i get a battery atleast. and do you need the keys to operate it? or are they basicly pointless like on some quads? if keys are needed anyone know which wires to connect on the ignition to bypass?.

i know it seems like alot of questions but have a dissassembled quad is bugging me lol. so i want to get it going asap. bout to get a gas tank and wire harness soon.

It sounds as if it is a 95-97. But they are all the same. Most of the bolts and nuts on the Lakota are 6M, 8M, and 10M and usually easy to find. Or, you can try these options:
1995 Kawasaki Lakota 300 4 Wheeler Nuts & Bolts - eBay (item 110539858395 end time Mar-25-11 17:33:13 PDT)

1997 KAWASAKI KEF 300 LAKOTA TEAR DOWN BOLTS - eBay (item 110510961527 end time Mar-18-11 10:29:47 PDT)

180 piece metric bolt kit Yamaha Honda Kawasaki Suzuki - eBay (item 280560474082 end time Mar-09-11 10:14:14 PST)

Unfortunately, yeah the Lakota needs a battery to run. You can get a new ignition switch with a key but, and only if you have absolutely have to run it, Dont hack up your new harness just tear into the old ignition switch and jump the wires on it. Just be sure to unhook them as it will run a battery down fairly easily. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001...mQQhashZitem5197ffb4abQQitemZ350442468523QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Hope this helps and good luck.

on my mojave half the bolts on it,(including all the body bolts) are the m6 bolt. I just wet to lowes and bought about 5 dolors worth of different lengths and nuts and had everything i needed

#5 ·
is the m6 just the thread pitch? or is that like diamater and threads so i only need to worry about length? not to formiliar with buying metric bolts lol.

but on a good not i stopped at the kawasaki dealership today and they were able to shed some light on the year of my lakota. it a 97, and they said as long as part numbers match i can use parts off of any year. i found the kawasaki parts house website so i can make sure numbers match before i buy any parts as well. so hopefully this thing will be tearing up some dirt again soon.

ok, well i just bought a wire harness off ebay for $36 after shipping. should be here in 3-7 buisness days so looks like its getting underway. as soon as i get a chance im going to go bolt shopping at lowes to get it more together.

I'm not to familer with metric's either. All I know is that if you go to lowes or home depot they have a drawer labeled M6 and there all the same thread but different lengths. Also check out BikeBandit.com they have all the diagram's and part numbers you need

I'll check the pitch on some random Mojave bolts tomorrow.

The number part of an M6 or M8, etc indicates the bolt size in mm. You'll see another number for the thread pitch like 1.00 or 1.25. It will also show the length like M6x1.25X25mm.

I have both an SAE and Metric pitch gauge in my 60 piece tap and die set that I got from Harbor Freight for $12. Some of the best money I've spent in a while.

went to lowes on the way to school today and picked up some m6 and m8 bolts. along with some nuts and lock washers. got a m10 nut to to make sure it was the right size for my motor mout bolts. im gonna try and see if they fit tomorrow when i wake up. if there the right size but wrong pitch ill get diffrent ones. also gonna see exactly how many of what ones i need. i just got a small amount of each for a fit test.

OK well the bolts i got are m6 1.00x16, m8 1.00x20, 6mm lock washer, m8 1.00 nuts, and a m12 1.25 nut. i guess i accidently grabbed a m12 instead of a m10. ill check and see if they thread in easy and see if that m12 is to big or just the right size for my motor mounting bolts. if to big i know for sure that its a m10

ok is there some type of hour counter on the left side of the lakota in the plastics? cus if so im apparently missing that to. im assuming its not needed in any way though right?

well its starting to look more and more like a quad again every day i touch her. found out my parking break cable is snapped though. and im missing the rear hydraulic brake line. anyone know whats the best thing to put in hole to turn the ecentric? its out to far right now for me to put the chain on by one whole link. and if someone could post pics of the rear brake lines cus i cant see them that well in my manual. along with the cable for the reverse nob up on the handle bars so i can see how it hooks to the engine. and when i move the shifter lever up and down i can see a little fluid coming out... how do i fix this? but if some one has some good pics of the cables and hoses being ran with the plastics off i would greatly appritiate it.

I figured you were going to ask about that. I almost included it in my post.

I'm not quite sure what the point of it was, but there was a plastic piece that goes along the inside of the front plastics and connected two inserts that (from the outside) looke like screws that hold something on. The weren't really screws, and as far as I can tell they never held anything on. The only thing they could possibly be for is the snorkel, and I'm almost 100% sure that it had nothing to do with that.

So, short version is, it was either a cheaply done design detail that someone somewhere thought looked cool. OR The hole might have been useful for the mojave and they decided it would be cheaper to plug it than to make different plastics when creating the Lakota.

I will try to get some photos of mine tonight. Mine is torn down right now for paint, so I'm probably at about the same spot as you as far as level of assembly.

I wouldn't bother with the parking brake cable at all. They go bad really quickly. I tore mine of when I stripped it to prep for paint, and I'm not putting it back on. As for the rear axle, I've always used the largest screwdriver I can find.....but mine isn't jammed up so it may not be enough for your case.

If it is leaking oil around the shifter shaft, then its just a matter of replacing the oil seal. Its a simple task. Mud kills those type of seals. Lol! Be sure to loosen the bolts up as far as you can without removing them at the axle carrier and if you can get it to turn try spraying some graphite lube up in where the carrier touches the swingarm. or remove and use antisieze. The round hole...if its the one I'm thinking of, is for the petcock on the tank. Keep the questions coming. We'll help you get her together yet. Lol!

I've got oil leaking around my shifter too, thats my next project to fix. I picked my lakota up cheap, it'd been wrecked and half-assed maintained and I've kept busy fixing it up. It looks post-apocalyptic but it runs fine and is almost 100%.
If you can find the link to that repair manual around here it has all the hose routings in it.

i actually downloaded that file already printed it out put each page in the individual holders and put it all in a binder. lol but the problem is some of the pics are so hard to see cus its black and white thats why i just asked for people to post them.

ok, sounds like the parking brake is going bye bye then, just thought it be kinda nice to have but oh well. still need to know how that little reverse knob cord off the handlebars is ran through and around the frame and how/ were it connects to the engine.

and by the way everyone thanks for the help and input. this is my first time ever really working on a quad lol.

Here are some pics. I grabbed a shot of the brake cable from mine, but I haven't put the reverse cable back on yet, so I grabbed some pics from my buddies lakota. I can get more if you want them, I realize these don't show all of it. I was in a hurry, so I just snapped these quick.
this is very helpful i apritiate it. can u get a pic of where the reverse cable connects to the engine so i can see that? and one of the vertical part of the rear brake so i can get a better idea of that as well

No, you can purchase just an outside oil seal for the shift shaft from a reputable parts supplier or Kawie dealer. Just be sure when you go to replace it that you clean up the shaft with some fine emory cloth to knock down any nicks that may catch and ruin your new seal. It also helps to put a little oil on the shaft to help from damaging it as well.
