Winch install on '95 Bayou 400

I am thinking about installing winch on my 95 Bayou 400.

I just got this machine, and am not familiar with how much amperage the battery/generator will put out. It uses a 30 amp main fuse for all the auxillaries, and the starter is direct from battery.
Looking for some advice on what size winch and limiting factors (like max amperage).
Looking at either a 2500 or 3500 lb winch.
Also, does anyone make a winch mounting bracket for this machine?
The battery specs are 12v and 19ah.

Thanks

Any mount you do is gonna be custom. There is no off the shelf bolt on kit unless you stumble on some NOS somewhere. If you find one you better go buy a lotto ticket that day. The winch will have to hang off the front or mount on the front rack due to no space to tuck it under the bike (like newer bikes).

I will warn ya if you find any parts you want you better grab them when you see them. The aftermarket for the most part died for these years ago and stuff besides regular replacement (and even some of that) has dried up. I've been working on a 94 that was given to me.

True about the older models not being built with winches in mind. Winch mount plates stick out about a foot too, so you have to take that into account if say hauling in the back of a truck. Harbour Freight also sells a ball hitch rear mount winch attachment which I think are much better suited to the older machines.

always put a 2inch mount on from HF and use the winch mount for it. winches last alot longer when they live in the box. ive got a superwinch that ive had since 2004, never been apart and still works fine. second contactor and third cable but they get used it for wood for quite a while. no atv battery or charging system is made to cope with the draw though. your best bet is to use it in little amounts dont hold it on for long time, then you have to let it charge back up. at just idle doesnt make much revving it up a little helps, have a atv specific charger put the battery on after is even better

Sorry to hijack the thread. I have a 94 Bayou 400 and have been trying to figure out how to get a winch on it. Found a warn winch mount NOS on ebay, is it worth it? Does anybody know what they look like installed?

I can't post the link because I'm new, but google warn winch mount bayou 400 and it comes up.

Thanks the response and posting the links.

That was my fear, it sticking out too far. I do a lot of hard trail riding and it sticking out that far wouldn't be good. Back to the drawing board, or a hitch mounted winch might be the way to go. I only need one when I'm out by myself or with my son, his atv isn't big enough to pull me out with a tow strap.

A friend of mine suggested mounting a plate to the front rack and putting the winch there. Would that be strong enough?

I understand, I'm in the exact same boat. I hate hitch mounted winches and have been looking at that option. Even looking at moving the rad up to the rack and mounting the winch in it's place, I also dislike the rad relocates. Other option is rear mount it but that never gets you where you want/need to go, only the wrong direction from it.

No clue on the rack mount idea. I'm in process of restoring my bike and that's one of the few parts that was missing when I got it. I guess as long as you aint out in deep buckshot or need scuba gear while you ride it might work if you can live with it up there in the way.

Good luck, you find a better solution hollar at me.

Got me a Badlands 2500 lb winch on sale from HF for $49 and installed and wired it up. Got 2 mounting plates also, and welded up a bracket out of 1-1/2" x 1/8" angle and U-bolted it to the bumper and frame in 6 places. Mounted the relay under the seat on the left side between frame piping, behind the plastic fender. Have not taken it out and used it, but did test it, and it works. Should be just what I need.
